If you are looking for an exciting career that offers many challenges,
advancement potential, and opportunities to learn and improve your skills,
then consider Utica National. With a variety of diverse career tracks,
there are possibilities for people of many skill levels. Most careers
fall under one of five broad categories.
Underwriting Underwriters
are risk takers and decision makers. Charged with profitably growing our
company by selecting and pricing the business we write, an underwriter
needs to:
- Be intellectually curious
- Have great interpersonal skills
- Be team-oriented to effectively partner with our independent agent-customer
sales force
When an application for insurance is received, the underwriter's job
is to determine if it should be accepted. They walk the fine line between
assigning enough premium to cover the risk and maintaining the competitive
prices necessary to obtain the best business.
People who are successful in this job enjoy the interaction and fast
pace that comes with working with many different people throughout the
day. They also need technical expertise and a commitment to ongoing learning
to stay informed of the rapidly changing trends in our business.

Information Technology/Client-Server Information
Technology is changing the world
and the world of insurance. At
Utica National, we're committed to utilizing new and existing technologies
to
achieve the level of efficiency our agents, co-workers and policyholders
demand.
We've blended the traditional mainframe world with a client-server environment
to reach new levels of performance countrywide. Programmers work on automating
and maintaining systems used by nearly all employees and our independent
agents. Hardware specialists support servers, desktop PCs, and other equipment
throughout the company's offices.

Customer Service Insurance
is a service industry. That means our success depends on how efficiently
we process, issue, and service the many thousands of transactions and
inquiries that support our policyholders. From assigning proper rates
to issuing the actual policy to troubleshooting problems, service professionals
manage the internal operations so important to the delivery of our products.
Services employees support other departments and customers and departments
by:
- Processing policies, endorsements, changes and amendments to policies
- Performing cancellations
- Assisting agent/customers
- Distributing communications
Your day might also involve generating reports from outside sources to
determine whether or not a policy will be written. When an insurance application
arrives, it is services employees who help it on it's way from start to
finish. In this high touch environment, you will interact with agents,
customers, and employees from many other departments to get the job done.

Claims Claims
specialists are the investigators of our business. They gain satisfaction
not only from paying legitimate claims, but also from thwarting fraudulent
ones. Part investigator, part troubleshooter, and part customer consultant,
the claims professional works with many people to assist policyholders
who have suffered a loss.
This rewarding job is a challenge every single day. As a claims professional,
your goal is to put people back into the financial condition they were
in prior to the accident or claim.
You are typically the first person a policyholder speaks with after a
loss. You must not only help reassure the claimant, but also determine
if the claim is covered by the policy. This means collecting information,
and might require some investigation and conversations with different
people to get the facts straight. Since every claim is different, each
call brings new adventure and new interactions.

Finance Finance
involves keeping the assets and liabilities of the company in balance.
Because insurance companies are required by law to maintain financial
reserves sufficient to pay claims, the tracking of these reserve funds
and other financial activities create jobs for accountants in two broad
areas:
- Financial
- Budget and Cost Accounting.
Corporate accountants handle a variety of daily activities, from preparing
a wide variety of reports for use by various departments and senior management,
to administering reinsurance and FAIR plans. Accountants track premiums,
losses and commissions paid to keep our books up-to-date. As you can see,
you'll have many opportunities to use and expand your finance and accounting
skills.
