These tips can help you be safe on the water with your boat

  1. Life Jackets. You and your passengers should be wearing life jackets at all times. The U.S. Coast Guard reported that 78% of boating deaths in 2014 were due to drowning, and 84% of the victims were not wearing a life jacket. Just Wear It.
  2. Get educated. Coast Guard data from 2015 reported that 71% of deaths occurred on boats where the operator had no boating safety instruction. Only 15% of deaths occurred where the operator had received a nationally approved boating safety education certificate. Learn it.
  3. Weather watch. Check the weather before leaving the dock. Get weather apps for your phone or tablet.
  4. Create a float plan. Tell a family member, friend, or staff of your plans. Better yet, get the US Coast Guard App and file a float plan there.
  5. Don't drink and boat.

Before you decide to embark on a boating adventure, make sure you have adequate coverage. Be safe, be secure.
